Given his usual prodigious rate of release, it seems to have been a little quieter than usual around Dave Huismans lately. It’s all relative though – new 2562 material has been fairly sparse on the ground, but his AMUS label is starting to pick up further momentum with June’s Alarm/Crisis 12” and another plate due to appear soon. So it’s good to hear Little White Earbuds’ 57th podcast, Huisman’s combative 2562 vs. A Made Up Sound mix. In the vein of Paul Rose’s blinding Scuba vs. SCB mix for RA, it offers a potent snapshot of just where his sound’s at right now - both cases show producers gradually narrowing the gap between each alter ego’s music. But unlike Scuba’s shift from dubstep-paced opening section to slower pulse this mix is a thorough blend, bass music tendencies and broken beats forced into a propulsive chassis of house and techno.
It’s also packed with new material - tracks from Deep Teknologi’s T. Williams, Cosmin TRG, Breach, Instra:mental and Ramadanman further bridge the gap between jacking funky house, juke-style 808s and fluorescent garage, and an early highlight sees Huismans’ own ‘Rear Window’ drop seamlessly into heady techno from Skudge and Will Saul & Mike Monday. More than ever though, the mix is indicative of the mongrel state UK-inspired bass music finds itself in at the moment – a period of rapid evolutionary change, probably best demonstrated in Addison Groove’s utterly brilliant and totally indefinable ‘Sexual’. Plus there’s a great interview with Huismans attached that looks into the gap between the perceived and real distances between his different musical personalities.
