VHS noisenik Sam Meringue’s been intriguing us for a while now. Whether he’s tapping into the infinite feedback loop of smouldering pop culture detritus or surfing the alien soundwaves for submerged, extraterrestrial Glam, the results are always as thrilling as they are hypnotic. Although his last weirdo transmission under his Outer Limits Recordings alias ploughed the fields of 80s MTV in a way that the Matrix Metals project only hinted at, he recently dropped a set of absurd videos for what can only be described as fully formed Pop masterpieces.

Tickling the same spot Ariel Pink created in us the first time we drew for The Doldrums, this latest outing is a fascinating reinvention from noisy bedroom introvert to prankster pop savant. Put into the context of his wider work under 90210/Matrix Metals/Flashback Repository aliases, its as if the warped records that acted as Meringue’s original inspiration have been reissued in luxury remastered LP boxsets. Clarity back intact, no more unplayable skips, decimated grooves restored. No idea where these tracks will eventually end up, but christ they’re fun!
