"IF YOU WANT A VISION OF THE FUTURE, IMAGINE CRAP 808 SAMPLES STAMPING ON A HUMAN FACE- FOREVER"

Bit of a curveball for Tectonic, this one. Manchester’s Illum Sphere has been building wonderful, ethereal beats for a while now (his Long Live The Plan EP from early last year was lovely, heading down the kind of astral vortex you’d typically associate with his LA bass/hip-hop contemporaries), but nothing quite like ‘Dreamstealin’. Rather than allowing his synths to dictate the motion of the track, here he scatters them across an ostensibly solid beat structure, allowing them to trickle into the music’s superstructure, packing out every space. The result is a colour-saturated, utterly psychedelic track, quite unlike anything he’s done before. It certainly couldn’t be more appropriately titled, silvery tints of mercury seeping into the ripples of the brain. Fuck drugs - this gem makes your poison of choice feel pretty unnecessary.

Or check it as part of Pinch’s rather fantastic Boiler Room set from the other night, alongside a frankly insane selection of other dubs. The Swamp81 connection is infusing his sound with added urgency - nothing but a good thing.
