around two years ago, Jack Barnett described These New Puritans next move: “dancehall meets Steve Reich”. in the context of Beat Pyramid and their ridiculous fashion-focused career prior, you’d be forgiven for dismissing it as one of those bullshit, NME tagline pandering soundbites- file under contrived exoticism, file under forced name drops… but this! this is pure, unadulterated wonder. seven minutes of overwhelmingly adventurous, unclassifiable brilliance. We Want War marries electronics, tribal percussion and renaissance choral works in some unholy matrimony of disjoint musical movements, a monumental rejection of compromise.
even better, the problematic elements of past work seem to have been eradicated: the convictionless vocals, the horrific lyrics, the kiddie-baiting offbeat, post punk guitars. the audacity of a band in TNPS’ position doing something like this is one thing, but the fact that they’ve pulled it off with such finesse is a whole different matter. the first genuinely amazing single of 2010, without a doubt.
