a compatriot of lo-fi mischief makers ariel pink and john maus, gary war treads much the same path: bizarre, hauntological synth pop that evokes a strange, woozy loneliness. coming on like the radioactive spectres of eighties pop rising from warped bargain bin LPs forever abandoned, every element is wrapped in a gurgling, irradiated layer of abstractness. that’s not to say there aren’t hooks; much like the best of haunted graffiti, traversing the weirdo-psychedelic landscape yields some gloriously trippy, skewed pop gold.
