"IF YOU WANT A VISION OF THE FUTURE, IMAGINE CRAP 808 SAMPLES STAMPING ON A HUMAN FACE- FOREVER"

A particular highlight of Martyn’s Fabric 50 was Zomby’s rave horns cutting through the traditionally po-faced mix series with a “B-B-B-B-BADBOI” and yet still unjarringly sharing the same space as Levon Vincent and Ben Klock: no mean feat. Continuing the tightrope walk between rawkus rudeness and crystalline fragility, Zomby’s remix of Hear Me comes strapped with a stuttering, post-funky groove and a gorgeous kaleidoscopic set of cyclical synth lines. Zomby stretches the urgency out of Martyn’s “can’t you hear me” vocal sample, anchoring its newfound desperation to a gene spliced dub bassline. If it wasn’t already apparent that Zomby was completely unshackled by genre conventions by the time One Foot Ahead Of The Other dropped, distinctly un-dubstep excursions on Digital Flora, Tarantula and this seem to have cemented the fact: the bpm has been dropped, the groove has been upped and his productions are all the better for it.
Coming in strong on the flip is the masked man of mystery, Redshape. His rerub of Seventy Four made an appearance on Martyn’s Fabric mix, but as with last year’s brilliant Dance Paradox, when allowed to grow and envelop in isolation its oh-so-much better. Redshape renders the original unrecognisable, destroying its perky bounce with a dark techno excursion. Characteristically well produced, hypnotic tribal drums anchor an encroaching ascension upwards: the kind of ritualistic hum that makes 7 minutes feel like 20 and 2 all at the same time. An essential 12”, with even more to come- the astounding Ben Klock remix of Is This Insanity arives next week.
