"IF YOU WANT A VISION OF THE FUTURE, IMAGINE CRAP 808 SAMPLES STAMPING ON A HUMAN FACE- FOREVER"

Build
Back when Anaconda dropped in the middle of last year, people (justifiably) freaked out. Not only was this bizarre, skeletal eskibeat upgrade jittering its way into the record bags of everyone from Kode 9 to Crookers, dancefloors positively ignited every single time those weird percussive slithers unassumingly sneaked out. What was particularly striking about the record was the many faceted vibes Untold coerced out of such minimal parts. It had elements of grime’s cartoony playfulness, but it was produced with uncharacteristic slickness. It was heaving with bass weight, and yet ultra rhythmic. It was funky but it wasn’t “Funky”. What-u-call-it indeed.
Being as bare bones as it is, its handily acted as a foundation for Untold’s work since, all manner of augmentations being strapped to its trademark flex. On the second release for Baobinga’s fledgling label Build, Untold bolsters the template with pure ‘ardcore energy, a pummeling maelstrom of riddim fury. You can practically feel the heat coming off this one, some real sweaty, peak time business. And like all of Untold’s work, no matter how rawkus the energy levels, all rowdiness is crafted with utmost precision, each warped bass hit perfectly balanced. Baobinga’s original is perfectly competent, but with Untold utterly blitzing it on the flip you can’t help but feel its a tad overshadowed. In isolation it hits all the right spots with some great percussive groove, but it doesn’t quite reach the same unadulterated, hedonistic headspace as the remix.
