ALWAYS EVERYTHING 1.0

So I don’t really update this blog very often. A couple of people have asked me to update it more over the last couple of months, although I imagine they comprise around 75% of the readership. There’s been a couple of reasons I haven’t; partly because a whole heap of time has been taken up by exams, but mostly because future plans made it seem pointless updating a tumblr with the long form features I want to do.

For now, I’m going to operate the tumblr more or less along the lines of most blogs: a fairly low content run off of “stuff-that-is-happening” presented as is. I’ve teamed up with the excellent Rory Gibb of Sonic Router/Drowned In Sound/Muso’s Guide fame (or should that be infamy? ehehehehehe) to put together an “Always Everything” that’s more befitting of its name. ETA is August, and the website will take the form of a focused few features each fortnight, full of the over-theorising and tenuous line drawing that warms the cockles of our hearts. Whilst thus far I’ve only really written about dance music (and a high proportion of that has been on instrumental hip hop), our main site proper will take in everything we dig- and most importantly, attempt to bring out the shared truth these radically different modes strive towards regardless of location/scene/ephemera.

The kinds of music we’re both most interested in at the moment largely come from the same place: adventurous individuals trying to forge new sonic territory, often in their own bedrooms, often within the confines of limitations. These may be the limitations of available technology, limitations of technical prowess or limitations of form. We want to draw the lines between the early grime producer utilising Playstation software to make beats, the lo fi noisenik recording hypnogogic drones onto four track and the accomplished Berlin producer continually pulling new and exciting permutations out of four to the floor. Most music taps into the same primitives- abstract emotions, musical mappings of real world structures,  - but its all too easy to get bogged down in particular forms  given musical tastes tend to develop along tribal lines. Idea of musical “legitimacy” and “authenticity” tend to be inextricably tied to this, and one of our (admittedly fairly lofty) aims is to deconstruct these sentiments.

This Tumblr will act as an RSS feed of sorts, whilst the main site will house long form features. Launching concurrently will be a show on the excellent Bristol radio station Hivemind. We’re in good company with our favourite Bristol clubnights all hosting their own shows as well as a growing number of great producers. Onwards and upwards.
