12”S YOU MIGHT HAVE MISSED

2. MR DIBIASE - CAKEOLOGY

Fat City

Buy/Stream

“Half man, half SP404 beatmaker” Dibiase first came to my attention launching the All City LA 10” series on top form with occasional partner in crime P.U.D.G.E (who coincidentally drops his head melting debut full length “Idiot Box” on Ramp Records next Monday, cop that here). Five releases in, and numero uno still remains firm favourite; that means besting Ras G and Take, so you know its a world beater. Shortly afterwards Manchester based Fat City dropped this tasty nugget, a far more restrained showcase of the man’s wigged out beats.

Pulling back LA 1/10’s more maximal sample use, Cakeology has Dibiase in a breezy, low slung mode, replacing the full on 8 bit sludge-hop with jazzy synth washes and some gorgeous vocal samples. That’s not to say the video game influence isn’t still present, Atomic Slop augments its neck cracking beat with what sounds like Castlevania dungeon music, whilst sprinklings of Mega Drive bleeps n bloops flavour the rest of the EP to strong effect. Closer and highlight Cosmo Boppin runs on a sleazy Halloween bassline that wouldn’t be out of place on one of Brotha Lynch Hung’s spooky g-funk beats, drawing on a Drexciyan choir before unexpectedly switching up into an epic string filled finish not a million miles from a Jaylib production.
