Not content with just being part of a rad outpost for all manner of scuffed up, lo fi jams, Robin from 20JazzFunkGreats recently birthed Tri Angle Records; and I bet a lot of internet dudes are kicking themselves for not getting to that name first. I think the combination of W**** H****, “triangle” and being on a tumblr might be the incantation that drags you into the seventh level of ephemera hell, so to avoid being swallowed up into a bloggy Bosch nightmare I’ll describe it as an outlet for dark, encroaching, synth driven soundscapes tied to tribal shapes, with a roster more than a few steps ahead of its peers.

Ahead of any releases proper, and to coincide with her recent incarceration, Tri Angle Records has called upon signings and sonic compatriots alike to reinterpret, recontextualise and repurpose six of Lindsay Lohan’s smash hit singles. Turns out this is the first I’ve heard of her pop star career, and Youtube investigations have also unearthed singles by Hayden Panettiere! I’m intrigued to how far this rabbit hole goes, but despite acting as source material its all completely tangential to the mixtape. Twisted into all kinds of decrepit shapes, whatever once was is completely unrecognisable.

Stalker gives V/VM’s classic demolition of Chris DeBurgh’s Lady In Red a 2010 update, blitzing “Disconnected” into gnarled robot death sequences. Kosmiche man of the moment Oneohtrix Point Never contributes a “stresswave” (teehee) edit of “Something I Never Had”- although “edited” is a rather modest way of describing the synth blitzed remains of the original track, surrounded by lonely ambient washes, Ozymandias style. Babe Rainbow puts in a solid effort with some disorienting MBV synthes, all the more arresting stripped back utop bass drone, but its Autre Ne Veut who puts in the best effort. The remaining elements of “Bossy” sound bizarrely Lovecats esque (or perhaps even a little reminiscent of Madonna’s 80s classic “Everybody”) when pulled apart from the god awful Ibiza house beat of the original, with new vocals that are treated and pulled in all sounds of discordant, thrillingly pitch shifted directions. A strange sort of oddball pop fronted by the demonic bizarro inhabitants of Fraggle Rock. By the looks of it Autre Ne Veut has some future releases out on Olde English Spelling Bee- a mark of top quality if there ever was one - so definitely one to watch. Download away.
