Forthcoming on Olde English Spelling Bee/Upstairs

Following a show stealing appearence on Tri Angle Records’ Lindsay Lohan themed mixtape (reviewed here), the enigmatic Autre Ne Veut comes good with his debut LP, an effort that arrives courtesy of Olde English Spelling Bee and Upstairs, a label run by Dan Lopatin of Oneohtrix Point Never fame. OESB needs no introduction, having put out killer LPs by Rangers, James Ferraro, Forest Swords, Matrix Metals and more in the last year, whilst Lopatin is justifiably riding a wave of attention following his exquisite Returnal LP for Editions Mego.

Ahead of release at the end of August comes an oddly terrifying/hilarious video, lifted from one of those awful internet flicks where a bunch of 30 yr old pornstars pretend to be jocks on a campus where grotesque orgies spontaneously and repeatedly spring up. Don’t worry, no sexy stuff happens, its just the preamble (thank god). Hot cut “OMG” soundtracks “Lucky’s” 18th birthday: 80s cheeseball pop twisted in slight and unsettling ways, not so far that the original sentiment disappears entirely, but just enough for there to seem like something’s amiss. There are dissonant vocal harmonies, warped synthesisers and a frayed neurosis buzzing in the background. Radioactive Kylie Minogue 45s decaying, or maybe Madonna in the midst of some spectral possession.
