"IF YOU WANT A VISION OF THE FUTURE, IMAGINE CRAP 808 SAMPLES STAMPING ON A HUMAN FACE- FOREVER"
As well as contributing a lot of writing (albeit moreso Rory than me), we lay out some hype mixes: cos let’s face it, who reads anything anymore? Reading’s rubbish.
25 Tracks: A Dubstep Chronology by Eighteen on Mixcloud
First up, an exquisite mix from Rory charting the progression of dark proto-dubstep via Horsepower/Groove Chronicles, the DMZ/Tempa/Skull Disco glory period and right through to some of the exciting splinters we’re getting to grips with today. Ten years, 25 tracks. Not, as some internet dwellers have bemoaned, an “all you need to know about the dubstep genre in 25 tracks” cheat sheet, more a nicely mapped lineage of some extremely well loved music.
Grime Futurism For Drowned In Sound by Always Everything on Mixcloud
Next up, a companion to my grime article. Designed to showcase some of the patterns I’d drawn in the piece, I also wanted to draw out the awesome, retro futuristic vibe so many grime instrumentals have: mostly as a result of using some seriously sci fi synths. Most people up on their knowledge acknowledge stuff like the Untold eski head nods, but fewer recognise stuff like the Wiley rhythm tricks Zomby picked up or the grime synths the Night Slugs crew pay homage to.
Subliminal Transmissions Mix 01: August 2010 by Eighteen on Mixcloud
Lastly, another mix from Rory, the first in a new series he will be helming for DiS. The mix draws together some of the reviewed records in his first column as well as unreleased tracks from Superisk, Mau’lin, Hyetal and more.
